Mr. Shepherd’s political involvement stretches back more than 30 years, beginning when he began volunteering on political campaigns as a student at the University of Georgia. By the time he received his undergraduate degree in Political Science, Mr. Shepherd had served as a campaign manager for state and local candidates, as well as a held a full-time staff position with the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Newt Gingrich. Later, Mr. Shepherd would serve as Chief of Staff in the Georgia Senate, Legal Counsel to the Chair of the Georgia House Judiciary Committee, and a consultant with Landmark Communications, an Atlanta based political media and polling firm. He has managed or consulted on more than forty political campaigns at the local, state, and national levels.
As an attorney, Mr. Shepherd has served as both a prosecutor in Cobb County as well as a defense attorney at King & Spalding, LLP, a global top 25 law firm representing clients including Fortune 500 and 100 companies like General Motors, Delta Airlines, Coca-Cola, GlaxoSmithKline, The Home Depot, and General Dynamics.
Mr. Shepherd’s legal opinion and political insight have been sought by local, national, and international media. He has been invited to appear on Fox & Friends, CNN’s Nancy Grace, NBC’s Meet the Press, Al Jazeera’s Inside Story, and has been featured in publications including The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Boston Globe, The Washington Post, The Washington Times, Politico, The Hill, The Daily Beast, The Atlanta Journal and Constitution, Foxnews.com, CNN.com, and various other media and academic articles. Mr. Shepherd has also appeared in television, radio, and press articles in more than a dozen countries including Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Sweden, Japan, China, Brazil, and India. He has also been quoted or cited as a source on both political trends and corporate international diplomacy in academic publications in both the United States and Europe.
Involved in numerous civic organizations, Mr. Shepherd serves on the Board of Directors of Select Cobb and is a member of the Cobb County Chamber of Commerce’s Legislative Affairs Committee, the British American Business Council, the Kennesaw State University Political Science Advisory Committee, and is the Alumni Ambassador for the University of Oxford’s Saïd Business School as well as President of the Atlanta Oxford Alumni Chapter. Finally, Mr. Shepherd is the current President and Chancellor of the Captain John Collins Chapter of Sons of the American Revolution and on the Board of Directors of the National First Ladies Day Commission.
In March 2023, he was appointed by the Cobb County Board of Commissioners to a four-year term on the Development Authority of Cobb County. In June 2024, Mr. Shepherd was appointed by Governor Brian Kemp to a four-year term on the Georgia Access to Medical Cannabis Commission. He is also a consultant to the Carter Center’s Democracy Resilience Network, a cross-partisan, grassroots effort to bring together civic, business, and religious leaders, and citizens from across the political spectrum to serve as community advocates for peaceful political engagement around elections.
Mr. Shepherd is a graduate of the Sen. Paul Coverdell Leadership Institute (2005), the Georgia Academy for Economic Development (2008), Leadership Cobb (2018), and the Capitol Policy Leadership Institute (2022). He serves as a volunteer faculty member of the Washington, D.C. based Leadership Institute. He is admitted to practice law before the Georgia Court of Appeals, the Georgia Supreme Court, and the Supreme Court of the United States.
Mr. Shepherd lives in Marietta, Georgia, and has two children.
